Racers rarely endure the punishment of these courses just for the money. In order to win an adventure race competitors undergo a lot of deprivation. Because of the distance involved in this sport, teams cannot expect to carry a big load. Therefore, food rations are limited. Teams cannot afford to waste too much time sleeping.

Winning teams rarely sleeps more than ninety minutes a night. So, in addition to the physical trial of racing through rough terrain, endurance athletes can also expert to be hungry and exhausted. All of this sets the stage for the real battles, fighting fatigue, relying on skill, and working together as a team. In spite of these hardships, adventure racing is the world's fastest growing outdoor sport. In fact, the more popular races receive so many applications; they have to turn down many applicants. A majority of teams often fail to reach the finish line. Teams can be disqualified for many reasons, but for the most part, they drop out when team members are hurt or become sick.
